Phikkal Village Development Committee Ilam

Phikkal is a village development committee but now it is a part of Suryodaya Municipality in Ilam District in the Mechi Zone of eastern Nepal. Fikkal VDC lies on the Mechi highway near by Kanyam Tea Garden. It is one of the important business centers in Ilam district. Tea, ginger, broom grass, cardamom etc are the major cash crops of Phikkal VDC. It is famous for natural scenery and landscapes, which attract national as well as international tourist. It is also sub-divided in 9 different wards, the central office lise in ward number 6, in Fikkal bazzar. Every Tuestdays, the weekly market held (Haat bazaar) where local peoples to come to sell their local products.


Geography and climate: 
Phikkal Village Development Committee located in the Eastern Region in Ilam District of Mechi zone, Nepal. It is lies between 26°52’ 44.20” to 26° 56’ 30.33” north, and from 88° 02’ 00.62” to 88° 06’ 37.50” east. Phikkal VDC covers approximately 29.1 square km the total area of Ilam District and situated from 900 to 1812 meters from sea level. The VDC is bordered by Antu in the east, Panchakanya VDC in the west, Pashupatinagar, Gorkhe & Nayabazar in North and Kanyam VDC in the South. The major streams, like the Mayura Khola, Siddhi Khola and Maluma Khola etc. provide water for irrigation. Its temperature varies from 5 to 20 degrees. It is cold and freezing in the winter, mid warm in summer and fogg in the monsoon season.

Demography and Society: 
 According to 2011 Nepal census, Phikkal VDC has a population of 17,240. The major ethnicities in Fikkal are Bahun, Chhetri, Kami, Damai, Newar, Leptcha, Tamang, Sherpa, Magar, Rai and Limbu among others. The official language is Nepali (Nepalese) but some ethnics speak their own languages (mother tongue) like Limbu, Tamang, Sherpa, Limbu, etc. Most of people are influence by Hindu religion but there Buddhist, Kirat, Muslim etc. According to their religion, they celebrate the most important festivals like Dashain, Deepawali, Chhath, Buddha Jayanti, Loshar, Maghe Sakranti, Saune Sakranti, Mah Shivaratri, etc.

Education and Literature: 
Literacy rate of Phikkal VDC is very high, more then 76.92 % of people are literate in Fikkal VDC. For education there are one government higher secondary schools (Fikkal Ma. Vi) and some private schools (Sunrise English Boarding School, Everland International Academy, Pathivara Educational Academy, Panchakanya Awasiya vidhya Mandir) There are numbers of lower secondary and Primary school providing quality education in Fikkal Village Development Committee.

Economy: 
 Ilam is well known for its six “A”s, among them large amount of alu (Potato), Alan (milk), Alainchi (cardamom), Aduwa (Ginger) and Amroso (broom Grass) are product in Fikkal VDC. The main income sources of this VDC are agriculture. Besides of cash crops, Phikkal VDC supplies large quantity of green vegetables and milk. Phikkal lies on the Mechi highway so very good agri-business center of Ilam District.

Cultural and Natural Sports: 
 Phikkal is rich in natural and cultural heritages which is one of the finest tourist destination attraction both national and international tourists. There are many temples like Shiva Temple, Pranami Temple and Goudha Gumba located in Barbote. September and October are the best time to visit Fikkal. There are very good accommodation and food facility for travelers.

 Transportation: 
 Phikkal is lies on the Mechi Highway at de distance about 37 km from Ilam bazaar and 53 km from Birtamod, Jhapa. There are regular buses are available from Ilam and Birtamod. We can take private vehicle service from Ilam or Jhapa.
